The Otis Elevator Company
The Otis Elevator Company is one of the world's leading manufacturers of elevators and escalators. Founded in 1853 by Elisha Otis, the company is credited with inventing the modern elevator, making it safe and reliable for commercial and industrial use.
Elisha Otis was a New York-based inventor and businessman who was inspired to create a safer elevator after witnessing a tragic accident involving a hoisting machine. In 1852, he developed a safety device that would engage and hold the elevator in place if the hoisting rope broke. This invention was a critical breakthrough in the development of the elevator, as it eliminated the fear of falling and made elevators safe to use.
In 1853, Otis unveiled his invention at the New York World's Fair, where he demonstrated the safety of his elevator by having a team of horses cut the hoisting rope while he was on the elevator platform. The safety device engaged and held the elevator in place, proving that it was safe to use. The invention was a sensation and Otis was awarded a patent for his safety elevator in 1854.
Following the success of his invention, Otis established the Otis Elevator Company in Yonkers, New York in 1854. The company quickly became one of the leading manufacturers of elevators, and by the end of the 19th century, it had installed elevators in some of the world's most iconic buildings, including the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Empire State Building in New York, and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
The Otis Elevator Company continued to innovate throughout the 20th century, introducing new technologies such as the geared traction elevator in 1887, and the automatic elevator in 1926. The geared traction elevator was a significant improvement over the earlier rope and pulley system, as it was much more efficient and allowed for faster and smoother operation of the elevator. The automatic elevator eliminated the need for a human operator, making the elevator even more convenient to use.
In the 21st century, the Otis Elevator Company has continued to lead the way in the development of new technologies. The company has developed several energy-efficient elevator systems, including regenerative drives that capture and reuse the energy generated by the elevator during braking. Additionally, the company has embraced smart technology, developing destination dispatching and IoT systems that optimize elevator usage and reduce wait times.
The Otis Elevator Company is also committed to sustainability, and it has implemented several initiatives to reduce its environmental impact. The company has developed elevators that use eco-friendly materials and that are designed to last longer, reducing the need for frequent replacement. The company also has recycling programs for scrap metal and other materials, reducing waste and preserving resources.
In conclusion, the Otis Elevator Company has played a vital role in the development of the elevator, making it safe, reliable, and convenient for commercial and industrial use. The company continues to innovate and leads the way in the development of new technologies, making elevators more energy-efficient and sustainable. With a rich history of innovation and a commitment to sustainability, the Otis Elevator Company remains one of the world's leading elevator manufacturers.

Elevators - Gearless Machines
Advantages Of Gear-less Machines Used In Elevators
Features of Gear-less Machines used in Elevators:
A Gear-less Machine adopts a disc brake, which has more advantages than the traditional drum brake.
The rate of malfunction is lower, which means it’s safer, and no
circumstances of brake getting stuck.
The noise of opening and closing brake is lower.
The adjustment of clearance between brake force and brake disk is more
labour-saving and convenient.
Adjustment is hardly ever needed in daily running.Brake absorption current is one half lower than that of a drum brake. A gear-less machine is built with equipment of pressure decline after brake starts working, which is no longer needed in the control box. The starting torque of a Gear-less Machine is strong, and the current of starting operation is smaller than the similar products. It can match lower power transducer, and save cost. According to strong starting power and low current, the physical volume of a Gear-less Machine is smaller than the similar kind of products.
According to the special design of a Gear-less Machine coil, the low speed starting and braking pulsation is less than similar products. A Gear-less machine does not have a gearbox, thus they do not require any type of oiling. Gear-less machines are considered superior to Geared Machines because they are more efficient and quieter in operation, requires less maintenance and has longer life. Due to the AC drive control, brake wear is virtually non-existent. It saves about 50% of energy consumption, and thus it consumes less current. Also frequent start-stop motion of the elevator will not cause any negative impact on this system. Gear-less Machines are used where the rise is more and very smooth & high speed operation is desired.
Summing up a Gear-less Machine has the following advantages:
1.No risk of oil contamination.
2.Nearly unlimited floor travel.
3.Has greater efficiency.
4.Has superior speed and performance.
5.Smooth & jerk free ride, high reliability, less noise and has a longer life span.
6.Safer ride when compared to a geared machine.
7.Saves on energy, actual consumption is about 50% that of geared machines.
